In a major operation on Saturday, the Gujarat Police detained over 1,000 Bangladesh nationals allegedly living illegally in the state.
The operation began in the wee hours in Ahmedabad and Surat It is seen as the aftermath of the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
According to police, 890 people were detained in Ahmedabad and more than 130 in Surat.
A senior police officer in Ahmedabad said that the Crime Branch along with Special Operations Group, EOW, Zone 6 and headquarters launched a joint operation to apprehend foreign immigrants residing illegally in Ahmedabad.
Majority of them were picked up from Chandola lake area of Ahmedabad.
The detainees were first held at the Kankaria Football Ground and from there they were paraded to the Crime Branch headquarter at Gaekwad Haveli.
An online meeting of top police officers was held during the day in which minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi also joined from Surat.
Sanghavi said after the meeting that the Gujarat Police has achieved a historic victory. Ahmedabad police has detained 890 illegal Bangladeshis, and Surat police has detained 134 of them.
This is the biggest operation of the Gujarat Police to date, in which illegally residing citizens have been shown ‘red eye’ by the police, he added.
The minister further said that these Bangladeshis come through (West) Bengal illegally by making fake documents and reach Gujarat and other states of India. Many of them are involved in drug cartels, human trafficking, and as we have seen earlier, how two Bangladeshis were caught while working as sleeper cells for Al Qaida, he added.
