A Pakistani teenage boy has been reunited with his parents after spending two and a half years in Indian custody. The minor was apprehended on January 12, 2022, off the Porbandar coast along with several other Pakistani fishermen aboard a Pakistani fishing boat.
He was charged with coastal border violation and sent to judicial custody at the zonal observation home in Rajkot by the Juvenile Justice Board of Porbandar. On August 25, 2022, the boy was convicted.
Following his two-and-a-half-year sentence, the authorities ordered his deportation. The Rajkot district collector’s office, the Social Justice department of the Gujarat government and the Gujarat Police coordinated his transfer to the Wagah border for repatriation. However, upon arrival at the Indo-Pak border, the boy’s parents did not show up to receive him.
Efforts were made by the district collector and other senior officials to establish contact with his parents. After successful communication, the boy was taken to the Atari border, where he was finally handed over to his family. During his 31 months in custody, the teenager not only served his sentence but also gained new skills, including learning Gujarati, yoga and some English.
