Post Covid Cardiac Complications Less In Kids

| Updated: February 26, 2022 17:21

The Covid-19 recovery path is a long one. For those with low immunity, it is full of complications and doctors have reported a rise in cardiac complications such as myocarditis. The good news is that, though rare in kids, it can lead to devastating consequences if not treated on time.

“Fortunately, Covid was gentler, milder, and less aggressive with children as they usually possess a robust immune system. This helps limit viral entry and reproduction, with a few exceptional cases where it targeted weak children with compromised immune systems or congenital defects,” explained Dr Yogesh Kumar Gupta from the paediatric ICU, Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru.

“As far as Covid in kids is concerned, we have noticed a marginal increase in cases of MIS-C (multi-system inflammatory syndrome). This can impair the heart and its function. Covid recovery can also be complicated with vascular thrombosis,” cautioned Dr Ajay Kaul from Fortis Heart and Vascular Institute, Noida.

Both medics reassured that only a small percentage of people are affected by these issues. There is no reason to press the panic button as children suffering from severe Covid disease is rare and while MIS-C is a cause of concern, kids are known to recover fast and better if treated on time. “If detected early, the prognosis is great, with higher chances of survival and recovery. Inversely, it might lead to morbidity and mortality if diagnosed in the later stages,” added Dr Gupta.

“The important thing to note is that kids have a better and quicker recovery. Kids are more resistant to Covid and to a serious form of the infection. However, there is need to be careful and watch out for any aberration,” stated Dr Kaul.
