‘Preserving Unity, Sovereignty Essential’: India on Syria Turmoil

| Updated: December 9, 2024 13:25

India emphasised on Monday that “all parties” must work together in order to maintain the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the war-torn nation of Syria, as the situation there continues to evolve following the ousting of former President Bashar Al-Assad.

A day after the fall of Assad’s government, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India supports a peaceful, “inclusive Syrian-led political process” that considers the objectives of every section of society.

“We are monitoring the situation in Syria in the light of ongoing developments. We underline the need for all parties to work towards preserving the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. We advocate a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political process respecting the interests and aspirations of all sections of Syrian society,” he said.

After the rebel groups overtook Damascus, the country’s capital, on Sunday, Assad fled to Moscow. Similar to what happened in Bangladesh when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India earlier this year, the Syrians looted supplies and ruined his palace. Her possessions had been taken when the protesters stormed into her residence.

The MEA further said, “Our Embassy in Damascus is in contact with the Indian community, for their safety and security.”
