Putin’s Wealthy Russian Critic Pavel Antov Found Dead In India

| Updated: December 27, 2022 18:32

Pavel Antov, a multi-millionaire lawmaker from Russia and opponent of President Vladimir Putin, was discovered dead after allegedly falling from a hotel in eastern Odisha, India, as per the media reports.

He was rumoured to be on vacation in the state’s Rayagada region for his impending 66th birthday celebrations. According to media accounts, he leapt off the roof, however, Alexei Idamkin, the general consul of Russia, said that he actually “fell” from a window.

“We are closely following the investigation and receiving all the information from the Odisha police,” said the envoy. The news comes two days after the enigmatic passing of 61-year-old Vladimir Budanov, a party associate of Antov. He reportedly had a heart attack in early December and died as a result. He was one of the few who opposed Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. He denounced the conflict and the airstrikes on Kyiv in a blog post from June, calling them acts of Russian “horror.”

Later, under criticism, he was forced to repudiate this particular claim, and the western media said that he did so with a “grovelling apology.” The 65-year-old claims that he has “always backed the president” and that he “sincerely” backs Putin’s military campaign. Local media, however, vehemently rejected his account.

According to the legislative website, Antov founded the Vladimir Standard group of firms. It quickly rose to prominence in the area, ranking among the most prosperous and important industries. The individual was a member of international organisations, a public figure, a traveller, and a philanthropist.
