Beijing has maintained a relentless zero-Covid approach with strict border closures and targeted lockdowns, even as other countries tentatively try to ease restrictions.

An elderly couple who were in a group of several tourists were linked to the latest outbreak of covid. They started in Shanghai before flying to Xi’an, Gansu province and Inner Mongolia.

Many cases have since been connected to their movement, with close contacts in no less than five territories and districts, including the capital Beijing, neighbourhood state-run administrations have carried out mass testing and shut grand spots and tourist sites, schools and entertainment venues in affected areas, and also imposed targeted lockdowns of housing compounds.

A few districts including Lanzhou-a city of around 4,000,000 individuals in northwestern China have told inhabitants not to leave except urgently necessary. The people who need to leave should show a negative Covid-19 test as proof.

airports in the contaminated districts have dropped many flights, as per information from aviation tracker VariFlight. Around 60 per cent of flights to the two main airports in Xi’an and Lanzhou have been cancelled.

In a notice published on  Monday, Erenhot in Inner Mongolia said that travel in and out of the city was banned and residents should not leave their housing compounds.  The new virus cases in Inner Mongolia were likely to affect coal imports from Mongolia because of supply chain disruptions,  Global Times a state-owned tabloid cautioned.
