In the ongoing investigation of the Morbi bridge accident, the main accused, Jaysukh Patel, has recently applied for bail in the Supreme Court. Following this application, the Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Gujarat government.
According to media reports, Patel, who is charged under IPC sections 304, 308, 337, and 114, had applied for bail in the Supreme Court after his bail was rejected by the High Court on December 19. Patel has been in jail for more than a year now.
The case dates back to October 30, 2022, when a tragic accident occurred leading to the collapse of a swinging bridge in Morbi. The accident resulted in the death of 135 people. The police had registered an FIR against 10 accused in the case. Out of these, eight individuals, including two managers of the Oreva company managing the Morbi swinging bridge, two clerks, three security guards, and one person associated with the bridge’s clerical work, have been granted bail by the High Court.
A hearing on Patel’s bail application will take place before a bench of two judges in two weeks. Two senior advocates, Nupur Kumar and Gaura, representing the victims, were present during the proceedings and are expected to oppose Patel’s bail application.
The Supreme Court’s notice to the Gujarat government marks a significant development in the case. Further updates will follow as the case proceeds.
