We live in absolutely fascinating times. A 19-year-old self-acclaimed American ‘chef’ posted a video of him rolling out a roti and eating it too, and the Internet went berserk.
In the viral video, Eitan Bernath, who describes himself as ‘chef, author, entertainer and entrepreneur’, admits that he spent ‘years’ trying to perfect his ‘Indian roti’ and then proceeds to give it a try.
Bernath starts by putting some atta into a bowl, pours lukewarm water on it and kneads the flour into a dough. He then puts some oil, covers it and lets it rest for 20-30 minutes.
“Roti is all about touching and feeling it, I don’t measure the ingredients,” he said.
Bernath then goes on to divide the dough into pieces. He even uses a traditional tawa to make fluffy, round rotis, getting visibly excited as the flatbreads start puffing up. Before serving, the teenager brushes it with some ghee.
The video was posted on Instagram on January 25 and has been viewed more than 6 lakh times, garnering over 50,000 likes so far. Netizens were really impressed by Bernath’s roti-making skills. A number of suggestions were focused on what dishes to eat a roti with. “Eat it with kababs or some gravy. totally worth it,” commented a user; “Add sugar on the hot ghee roti; roll it up and enjoy!” suggested another.
