A 20-year-old female undergraduate student was raped before her male friend at a popular Gopalpur sea beach. Ten of the accused were arrested, following a complaint filed by the survivor.
According to reports, the victim and the male friend were sitting at a secluded spot when 10 men arrived on three motorcycles.
The group allegedly started clicking photographs of the two and threatened to leak them online.
Reports added that they allegedly tied his hands and pulled the woman to a forsaken house where three of them allegedly took turns raping her.
The survivor and her friend reached the Gopalpur police station and reported the incident. Police immediately began investigations and visited the crime scene.
Reacting to the incident, Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said that he had ordered a thorough investigation.
“I am deeply saddened by the incident of gang rape of a young woman at Gopalpur beach. So far, 10 people have been arrested. I have spoken to the SP regarding this incident and have ordered a thorough investigation and necessary steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur in future,” Parida said in a post on X.
“The accused are all adults and are being interrogated. We are not ruling out the involvement of others,” Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M told reporters.
“Medical examinations of the survivor and all suspects are being conducted. The survivor’s condition is stable,” he added.
