India Urges Immediate Exit From Tehran Amid Escalating Iran-Israel Hostilities

| Updated: June 17, 2025 14:57

Israeli drones and missiles continue to strike Tehran even as the Indian government has issued an urgent advisory asking all Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to vacate the city at the earliest.

“All Indian Nationals and PIOs who can move out of Tehran using their own resources are advised to move to a safe location outside the city,” the Indian Embassy in Tehran said in a statement.

The embassy has also urged all Indian citizens in the city who have not yet registered with the mission to do so immediately. “All Indian Nationals who are in Tehran and not in touch with the Embassy are requested to contact the Embassy of India in Tehran immediately and provide their location and contact numbers.”

The advisory comes as Israel and Iran plunge deeper into a volatile conflict, now in its fifth consecutive day of mutual airstrikes. According to Iranian sources, 224 people—most of them civilians—have been killed so far. Israel has reported 24 civilian deaths and evacuated around 3,000 residents from vulnerable areas.

Explosions and heavy air defence activity were reported across Tehran on Tuesday, with Iranian media confirming smoke billowing in the city’s eastern districts following suspected Israeli strikes. Air defence systems were also activated in Natanz, home to key nuclear facilities, approximately 320 kilometres from the capital, according to the Asriran news website. In Israel, sirens wailed through Tel Aviv after midnight, though no missile impacts were reported.

According to reports, India has started evacuating its citizens from Iran. Reports claim that the first batch of 110 Indian nationals crossed into Armenia during the intervening nights of Monday and Tuesday. With over 10,000 Indian students believed to be stranded in Iran, New Delhi has pressed Tehran for safe evacuation corridors. Iranian authorities, citing the closure of their airspace, suggested that students exit through land borders with Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, or Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Iran has appealed to Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia to convince US President Donald Trump to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu into agreeing to an immediate ceasefire.

In return, Tehran has hinted at flexibility on stalled nuclear negotiations, according to two Iranian and three regional officials cited by new agencies.

President Trump has convened a high-level security meeting to review the Middle East situation. He later issued a stark warning on his social media platform: “IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran.”

As the skies over Tehran grow darker—literally and diplomatically—India’s message to its citizens is clear: leave now, while you still can.

The Indian embassy has listed three emergency helpline numbers:
