Trinamool Congress Councillor Dulal Sarkar Shot Dead, Mamata Slams Malda Police

| Updated: January 3, 2025 12:39

Dulal Sarkar, a councillor of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), was shot dead by unidentified assailants in West Bengal’s Malda district on Thursday morning. The incident, captured on CCTV, shows two attackers firing multiple shots at Sarkar as he attempted to flee into what appeared to be an office.

According to police reports, the attack occurred in Malda’s Jhaljhalia area. The assailants arrived on a motorbike, with one bullet striking Sarkar’s head and two hitting his body. He was rushed to Malda Medical College Hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, visibly angered by the incident, criticised the Malda Superintendent of Police during an administrative meeting at the state secretariat. She referred to the official as “useless” and revealed that Sarkar’s security had recently been withdrawn.

Expressing her grief, Banerjee mourned the loss of her close associate, who was affectionately known as Babla. In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote:

“My close associate, and a very popular leader, Babla Sarkar, has been murdered today. From the beginning of the Trinamool Congress, he (and his wife Chaitali Sarkar) worked hard for the party, and Babla was also elected a councillor.”

She added, “The culprits must be booked immediately. I am so shocked and sad that I do not know how to convey my condolences to the bereaved family. May God give Chaitali strength to survive and fight the battle.”

A police official confirmed that a probe has been initiated to identify the culprits.
