Twelve Indian nationals serving in the Russian Armed Forces have died, while 16 others remain missing, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday.
While addressing a weekly briefing, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed deep condolences and provided updates on the situation, highlighting ongoing efforts to ensure the safe return of those affected.
Jaiswal said, “The death of Binil Babu is extremely unfortunate. We have conveyed our condolences to the family. Our embassy is in touch with the Russian authorities to facilitate the return of his mortal remains to India at the earliest.”
He also confirmed that another Indian national, currently receiving medical treatment in Moscow, is expected to return to India after recovery.
Of the 126 known cases of Indian nationals serving in the Russian Armed Forces, 96 have been discharged and returned to India. Among the remaining 30, 12 have been confirmed dead, and 16 are considered “missing” by Russian authorities.
Jaiswal further emphasised, “We are seeking early release and repatriation of those who remain.”
Regarding the new sanctions imposed on Russia’s energy sector, Jaiswal clarified that India is closely coordinating with US authorities to assess the potential impacts on Indian entities.
He added, “Our oil purchases have been, and will continue to be, guided by our own energy security requirements and prevailing global circumstances.”
