Mumbai’s mouthwatering street snack ‘vada pav’ has ranked 19 among the top 50 sandwiches worldwide. The ranking is by Taste Atlas, a well-known global food guide, which came up with a list of the ‘50 Best Sandwiches in the World’.
Being recognised globally is a thumbs up for India’s street food, which is known in the country for a large number of regional and local varieties as well as delectable taste.
Vada pav, which was first sold by Ashok Vaidya near Dadar station in the 1960s, obtained a rating of 4.3 in Taste Atlas’ survey.
The snack is easy to make and an affordable dish which contains a crisp potato patty (vada) placed inside a soft bun (pav). The chutneys, that are both spicy and tangy, give the dish its characteristic flavour. It is usually served with dried garlic.
The food item is popular not only in Maharashtra, but also in other Indian states. It is cheap, and easy to carry.
The Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwich and the Turkish Tombik Doner topped the list with a 4.6 rating. Lebanese Shawarma, Montreal Smoked Meat and Lobster Rolls figured among the top ten.
Sharing the list on Instagram, Taste Atlas asked its followers to pick their favourite sandwiches.
