On the second day of the fourth Global Renewable Energy Investors Meet (RE-Invest) 2024 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel launched ‘Mission 100GW of renewable energy in Gujarat’ aimed at installing 100GW of renewable energy (RE) by 2030 in the state and help achieve India’s target of attaining 500GW capacity. The Central theme of RE-Invest is Mission 500GW, underscoring India’s strategic goal to significantly expand its renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Stressing that Gujarat had attracted Rs 3.07 lakh crore investment commitments in the RE sector, Patel said the state was leading the country in the production of wind and solar energy. Of the state’s installed energy capacity of over 50,000MW, 54% came from renewable energy sources, eh said.
The Gujarat CM also unveiled ‘Gujarat Energy Vision 2047′ on the occasion.
Gujarat’s energy and green hydrogen policies are excellent examples of this. The state govt is also promoting emerging sectors like semiconductors and fintech. Gujarat is the only state in the country where four semiconductor plants are going to be established, which is also very significant for the future of the energy sector.
As of April 2024, Gujarat had 27.8GW of the total installed renewable energy capacity, comprising around 11.7GW of wind power (the highest in the country), 13.8GW of solar power, 1,990MW of large hydro and a small capacity of biomass (112.5MW) and small hydropower (91.64MW), the govt said.
As the fourth largest country globally in installed renewable energy capacity, India aims to further consolidate its leadership in the global energy transition.
Speaking during the launch ceremony, Pralhad Joshi, Union minister of new and renewable energy said, “Under the PM Solar Home Free Electricity Scheme, 3.5 lakh customers across the country have installed rooftop solar systems, with 50% of installations already completed. Gujarat has made the best use of the Rs 4,490 crore allocated for clean energy initiatives.”
He also said a total investment of Rs 32.45 lakh crore had been committed in renewable energy projects till 2030. Manufacturers have committed to additional manufacturing capacity of 340 GW in solar modules, 240 GW in solar cells, 22 gigawatts in wind turbines and 10 gigawatts in electrolysers, he stated.
Key international partners for this year’s event include Australia, Denmark, Germany and Norway. High-level delegations from the US, UK, Belgium, the European Union, Oman, UAE, Singapore and Hong Kong also attended, with some delegations led by ministers from Germany and Denmark.
“Gujarat has seen the journey from being a deficient state to an energy surplus state today and we are leading energy conservation and fossil fuel reduction initiatives. During his tenure as chief minister, PM Narendra Modi set up the first solar farm at Charanka. Out of about 50,000MW production, Gujarat today has 54% contribution of renewable energy,” said the chief minister, adding that Gujarat produces 25% of India’s wind energy.
The chief minister added that work was going on at a rapid pace at Khavda in Kutch for a 30GW installed capacity solar-wind hybrid energy park. He added that Gujarat aims to be a production hub of solar panels and wind turbines.
