All this 10-year-old wanted was to accompany his uncle to a market. So, the boy went to Munchun Kewat’s house in north Delhi’s Chandan Vihar Wednesday morning, excited about a trip to Azadpur Mandi. The main gate was latched from outside. He opened it, stepped in and pulled aside the curtain to the room.
His uncle wasn’t to be seen. But his aunt and three little cousins were lying in a room soaked in blood.
Anita, 27, and two months pregnant, lay dead along with her daughters aged three, four and five. Someone had slit their throats. The cuts were so deep, police said, that their windpipes had been severed.
Officers called the scene extremely brutal.
Kewat has not been seen since.
Neighbours reportedly heard the couple fighting on Tuesday night. By 5 am Wednesday, CCTV cameras near the house caught a man running down the street. It was Kewat — his phone went silent soon after, last tracked in Jahangirpuri.
According to reports, police received a distress call at 8.07 am. A team from Samaypur Badli police station reached the house and found the four bodies in a ground-floor room. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami said neighbours had flagged it to police around 8 am.
Investigators believe Kewat may have intoxicated his wife and daughters before killing them.
The suspected motive is deeply disturbing. Police said preliminary inquiry pointed to Kewat’s obsession with having a son. Anita was carrying their fourth child. All three of their daughters were dead beside her. An extramarital affair is also being examined as a possible angle.
Kewat is from Patna and had been living in the area for two years. He sold vegetables at Azadpur Mandi. The family shared a single room. His brothers lived just three streets away.
A case under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered and multiple teams have been formed to trace and apprehend Kewat, police said.
