Workers Die Cleaning Septic Tank Without Safety Gear At Ahmedabad Factory

| Updated: May 17, 2025 11:22

Three young workers died after inhaling toxic gases while cleaning a septic tank at a private factory in Ahmedabad. According to reports, the incident occurred on Friday morning at the effluent treatment plant (ETP) of MK Creation, a denim manufacturing unit located in the Danilimda area of the city. The report claimed that the factory, which had been shut for a period, was being readied for reopening when tragedy struck.

The deceased were identified by police as Prakash Soma Parmar (21), Sunil Popat Rathva (25), and Vishal Mohan Thakor (22). According to officials, the three men were assigned to clean the underground tank without the most basic safety gear—no masks, gloves, or helmets.

Inspector GJ Ravat of Danilimda police station stated that preliminary investigation revealed one worker fell unconscious after inhaling toxic fumes, prompting the other two to descend in a desperate attempt to help him. Ravat added that all three were pulled out of the tank and rushed to LG Hospital, but doctors declared them dead on arrival.

LG Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Leena Dabhi confirmed to a national newspaper that the victims had succumbed to the effects of noxious gases and were brought in lifeless at around 9:45 am.

The horrific event has triggered outrage and legal action. The labour contractor, Jignesh Ramesh Purabiya, and plant manager, Naushad Salim Shaikh, have been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, among other serious charges. As per the police, the duo has been detained but not yet arrested, and a full-scale investigation is currently underway.

The FIR was filed at Danilimda police station at 2:05 pm on Friday, based on a complaint by Bhagwan Dahya Parmar (52), the uncle of Prakash. According to the FIR, Bhagwan received a call from his niece Asha around 9 am, informing him that Prakash, Sunil, and Vishal had “suffered ill effects of noxious gases” and had been taken to LG Hospital in Maninagar. However, by the time he arrived, all three had already been declared dead.

Eyewitness accounts from two other workers present at the scene unearthed disturbing details. The cleaning job had reportedly been subcontracted for a mere Rs 18,000 by contractor Purabiya. On Thursday, five workers had started cleaning the tank and had asked for safety equipment. But, according to the FIR, neither Purabiya nor manager Shaikh provided any protective gear, forcing the men to resume work on Friday completely unprotected.

The accused now face serious charges under BNS Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 125 (endangering human life or safety), 286 (negligent conduct involving poisonous substances), and 54 (abettor present). Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and further action will follow based on the findings.

This appalling loss of young lives highlights a larger, systemic failure—where human safety is routinely compromised for cost-cutting, and labourers are treated as expendable. It remains to be seen whether justice will be swift or yet another tragedy will vanish into the files of bureaucratic indifference.
