39 Die in NorthEast because of Interminable Rain

Meghalaya and Assam have together observed a death toll of 90 people this monsoon season. The number of deaths in the past three days has reached 39 , with five people dying in Assam and one in Meghalaya on Saturday due to incessant rains.

Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, has declared a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the person next in the family, to all the deceased’s families.Eight people are also missing from 5 districts of Assam.According to reports, a group of 24 people was trying to move from the flooded village to a safer place when the boat capsized in the Raikota area of the district. Out of the 24, 21 people were rescued but three children are still missing.

Local Disaster Management officials have said that more rain could worsen the flood and landslide situation in the worst-hitworst hit Assam and Meghalaya. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, rains could be ongoing till at least June 20th which could cause havoc in the NorthEast.

East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya where Mawsynram and Sohra are located, two regions saw 1,003.5 mm and 972 mm of rain on Friday which makes them the worst affected areas of the entire NorthEast.

Due to unabating rainfall, nine rivers including Brahmaputra were flowing above danger levels, said a Central Water Commission report. The government requested people to take shelter in government buildings and schools.

The state Capital of Assam, Guwahati remained flooded for 3 days in a row. Areas such as Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Zoo Road, Six Mile, Bhootnath, Maligaon, Rajgarh Link Road, Hatigaon, Rukimingaon and Gotanagar were the worst affected. Officials reveal that over 234 roads and 16 bridges have been impaired by the rain.

The damage is not restricted to places or humans, as 23,32,210 animals have also been affected by flood water. No reports have been received regarding deaths of big animals, but 50 small animals have been washed away due to inundated water.

Floods and landslides have also been reported in Manipur, with two days of continuous rainfall. No injury or death has been reported. Landslides due to incessant rainfall were also reported from places of Tamenglong and Noney districts. Two major national highways have also been cut off due to damage from landslides.

Narendra Modi tweeted that the Assam State should rest assured as the Center would facilitate all help that’s possible. He further stated that he prays for the safety and well being of the people affected by flooding in Assam.

Another nearby state that has been badly affected by the inundation is Tripura. Over 10,000 people have ended up homeless by the floods, though there has been no human casualty as of now.

Over one lakh people in Assam are placed in 373 relief camps set by authorities. Northeast Frontier Railways has canceled, short-terminated, and diverted several trains due to overflowing of railway tracks.
