The upcoming appearance of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat at New York’s Madison Square Garden has sparked a wider debate over the organisation’s ideology, minority rights and the meaning of pluralism in India. The controversy has also grown after the social-media account of the group organising the event was suspended just days before the programme.
Bhagwat is scheduled to address the “Universal Oneness Celebration” on August 29, an event expected to bring together around 5,000 Indian Americans as part of the RSS’s global outreach during its centenary year.
The programme has drawn criticism from some community and civil-rights groups, while organisers say it is intended to celebrate Hindu heritage and promote interfaith unity.
Organiser’s X account suspended before event
The X account of American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD), the organisation hosting Bhagwat’s programme, was recently shown as unavailable on the platform.
AHEAD said it believed the suspension may have happened in error. The account was suspended shortly before the Madison Square Garden event.
The development has added another layer to an already politically sensitive programme, with supporters and critics debating whether the event should go ahead.
What the New York mayor said
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he did not support the planned gathering but also made clear that the city’s authority over a private event could be limited.
“I don’t support the rally, but I don’t know if the city has any jurisdiction on cancelling a private event,” he said.
Mamdani also spoke about his own understanding of India and its constitutional values. He said the India he grew up learning about was a pluralistic and secular republic where every person belonged, and expressed concern about movements that promote what he sees as an exclusionary vision.
His comments have drawn reactions from sections of the Indian-American community as well as Indian political circles.
Why the RSS remains at the centre of the debate
The RSS is a major Hindu organisation in India and has a long-standing ideological relationship with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), from which Prime Minister Narendra Modi emerged as a prominent leader.
The organisation describes itself as a Hindu-centric cultural and civilisational movement focused on bringing Hindus together and strengthening the nation.
At the same time, the RSS has faced longstanding criticism over allegations of intolerance and violence involving religious minorities. The organisation rejects such accusations and maintains that it is a cultural movement rather than a paramilitary organisation.
The debate has also included concerns about its approach to women, social hierarchy and religious identity. Critics have described aspects of its ideological framework as patriarchal and exclusionary, while the RSS and its supporters reject such characterisations.
Religious freedom concerns raised in the US
The controversy has intensified following comments from the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).
The commission has argued that religious-freedom conditions in India have deteriorated and has called for possible targeted measures against RSS members and Indian officials whom it believes are connected to violations.
It also called for the US government to consider revoking Bhagwat’s visa and restricting his future entry.
The Indian government has strongly rejected such criticism. The Ministry of External Affairs has described USCIRF as biased and lacking credibility, arguing that its assessments of India are inaccurate and driven by its own agenda.
Hindu-American groups call for vigilance
The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) issued a security advisory ahead of the August 29 event.
The organisation urged members of the community to remain alert, stay aware of their surroundings and keep interactions peaceful. It also called on New York authorities to protect everyone attending the programme and safeguard their civil rights.
The advisory followed reports of efforts by activists to oppose or disrupt the gathering.
The event’s organisers, meanwhile, have presented it as a celebration of Hindu-American heritage and interfaith unity, saying it is supported by several Hindu-American organisations.
Bhagwat’s three-country outreach
Bhagwat arrived in New York on Tuesday as part of a wider international tour covering the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
The visit has been organised by overseas groups during the RSS’s centenary year and is aimed at engaging with Indian and Hindu communities outside India.
His Madison Square Garden address will also coincide with the traditional observance of Raksha Bandhan, giving the programme a cultural and religious dimension.
A debate bigger than one event
The controversy surrounding the programme goes beyond whether one speech should take place.
At its heart is a larger debate over how Hindu identity, Indian nationalism, religious freedom and pluralism are understood both in India and among the Indian diaspora.
For supporters, the event represents an opportunity for Hindu Americans to celebrate their heritage and hear from the head of one of India’s most influential social organisations.
For critics, Bhagwat’s appearance provides a platform to an organisation they associate with major concerns over religious minorities, social exclusion and the direction of Indian nationalism.
With the event scheduled for August 29, the suspension of the organisers’ X account, the security concerns and the competing views surrounding the RSS have ensured that Bhagwat’s New York appearance is being watched far beyond the walls of Madison Square Garden.
