10,000+ Women Clear JEE Advanced 2026, Marking A Six-Year High

For thousands of young women across India, JEE Advanced 2026 brought more than just a rank. It marked a small but important shift in the long race for a place in the IITs.

More than 10,000 women qualified for JEE Advanced this year for the first time in six years, according to the Joint Implementation Committee report prepared by IIT Roorkee. A total of 10,107 women qualified in 2026, up from 9,404 last year.

The rise comes as women also recorded a better success rate in the country’s toughest engineering entrance exam. Among registered women candidates, the qualification rate increased from 21.7% in 2025 to 23.4% in 2026.

In simple terms, nearly one in four registered women candidates made it through this year.

The top female ranker scored 280 marks

The achievement was not limited to the overall numbers. The top-ranked female candidate in JEE Advanced 2026 scored 280 marks and secured All India Rank 77. Her subject-wise scores were:

Mathematics: 101
Physics: 86
Chemistry: 93

Her result also shows the level of competition among women who are now making their presence stronger in the country’s top engineering entrance examination.

More women are reaching IITs too

The increase in qualifiers has been accompanied by a rise in the number of women receiving IIT seats.

In 2026, 3,814 female students received IIT seat allotments. Of these, 3,777 seats were set aside specifically for women, while another 37 women secured seats through the gender-neutral pool.

Women accounted for around 20.22% of IIT seat allotments, compared with 20.15% previously.

The women-only seats were introduced by the IITs with the aim of ensuring that women make up at least one in five undergraduate students. Within the relevant category, women are given first preference for these seats.

The increase may look small as a percentage, but the larger picture is that more women are entering a space where they have historically been underrepresented.

The overall JEE Advanced pool also grew

JEE Advanced 2026 was conducted by IIT Roorkee on May 17, in two sessions.

A total of 1,87,389 candidates registered, while 1,79,694 appeared in both papers.

This year, 56,880 candidates qualified, compared with 54,378 in 2025. That is an increase of 2,502 qualifiers, or about 4.6%.

The increase among women was part of this broader rise, but the jump was particularly visible among women, SC and ST candidates.

SC and ST candidates also record strong gains

The JEE Advanced results showed a significant increase in qualification among SC and ST candidates.

The number of SC qualifiers rose to 15,856 in 2026, compared with 12,499 the previous year. Their qualification rate increased by nearly 9.8 percentage points, reaching about 50.2%.

Among ST candidates, 6,379 qualified, compared with 5,008 in 2025. Their qualification rate rose by around 8.1 percentage points to about 42.1%.

EWS qualifiers also increased slightly, from 6,291 to 6,377.

At the same time, the number of qualifiers in some other categories declined. General-category qualifiers fell from 16,154 to 15,883, while OBC-NCL qualifiers declined from 12,606 to 12,385.

The road to JEE Advanced itself is highly competitive

The exam was open to the top 2,50,000 candidates from JEE Main 2026. Due to bunching of percentiles, 2,50,174 candidates were declared eligible, excluding foreign and OCI/PIO candidates as specified in the report.

The qualifying criteria were also relaxed to ensure that at least twice the number of candidates qualified compared with the number of available seats in each category.

By the end of the process, 56,880 candidates had made it through.

Where did the top rankers go?

The IIT choices of the highest-ranked students remained concentrated among a few campuses.

Among the top 100 JEE Advanced rankers, 97 were allotted seats at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi or IIT Madras.

IIT Bombay alone accounted for 68 of the top 100 rankers.

Among the top 25, eight joined IIT Delhi, eight joined IIT Madras and six joined IIT Bombay.

The pattern shows how strongly the country’s highest-ranked students continue to prefer these three IITs.

IIT Kharagpur had the highest number of seats allotted

Across the IITs, the highest number of seats were allotted at IIT Kharagpur, with 1,952 seats.

It was followed by IIT BHU with 1,590, IIT Bombay with 1,366, IIT Roorkee with 1,357, IIT Delhi with 1,251, IIT Kanpur with 1,241, IIT Dhanbad with 1,215 and IIT Madras with 1,122.

A bigger number, but the journey is not over

The numbers show progress, but they also tell another story.

A total of 43,112 women registered for JEE Advanced 2026, while 40,562 appeared in both papers. Of them, 10,107 qualified.

Women made up around 23% of all registrations, but accounted for 17.8% of the total qualifiers.

So while more women are clearing the exam, their representation among qualifiers is still lower than their share among those who registered.

Still, crossing the 10,000 mark is a notable moment.

In 2025, 43,413 women registered for the exam and 9,404 qualified. The latest figures show that the number of women qualifiers has continued to move upward.

A number worth celebrating — and watching

For women aspiring to enter India’s top engineering institutes, the JEE Advanced 2026 figures offer a reason to celebrate.

For the first time in six years, more than 10,000 women have crossed the JEE Advanced qualification mark. Their success rate has improved, and more women have received IIT seats.

But the numbers also show that there is still a gap. Women accounted for 23% of registrations but 17.8% of qualifiers, and their share of IIT seat allotments remains just above the 20% mark.

So, 2026 may not be the end of the gender gap in IITs.

But it is certainly a year in which more young women crossed a difficult barrier and moved one step closer to the IIT classrooms they had worked towards for years.

And that 10,107 is more than just a number. It represents 10,107 women who cleared one of India’s toughest academic hurdles and earned their place in the next stage of the journey.
