Since the start of this month, Gujarat has been hit by haevy to very heavy rains. The many regions in the state, including Ahmedabad, have suffered flood-like situations as rivers have overflowed. There has been a lot of damage as many araes, societies, roads and houses in different cities got submerged in knee deep water. Traffic has been disruopted due to waterlogging and rain related accidents have been frequent.
In the latest, a road near Surabhi Park in Vastral area in Ahmedabad caved in, resulting in a huge ditch that is filled with water. This incident happened on the metro rail route in the area. Municipal corporation has put up a barricade around this ditch. The road that collapsed was constructed just a month ago, which hasd raised many questions regarding the quality of materials and methods used.
This is not the first time that a road has caved in in the city. As many as 25 such incidents have happened through the city. Cave-ins have been witnessed near on Ashram Road, Gujarat College Road, near Karnavati Club as well as main road near Jivaraj Park in Isanpur area and at Narol Chowkdi. Road near Kashiram Textile has also seen a cave-in and a ditch has been created. There is a ditch that is more than half a foot deep on the way down to Shyamal Bridge from Shivranjni Crossroads. Municipal corporation has put up barricades at all places, but real repair work is yet to begin.
