Al-Qadir Trust Case: Imran Khan Found Guilty, Jailed for 14 Years

| Updated: January 17, 2025 14:30

A Pakistan court on Friday found former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, guilty of corruption in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case. They were sentenced to 14 and seven years in prison, respectively.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Nasir Javed Rana of the anti-corruption court. Initially scheduled for January 13, the decision had been postponed three times before being announced in a makeshift court set up within Adiala Jail.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed the case in December 2023, accusing Khan, Bibi, and six others of causing a £190 million (approximately PRs50 billion) loss to Pakistan’s national treasury. While Khan and Bibi faced prosecution, the six other accused, including a property tycoon, remain abroad.

The case centres on allegations that £190 million returned to Pakistan by the UK’s National Crime Agency, as part of a settlement with the property tycoon, was misused. Instead of being deposited into the national treasury, the funds were allegedly redirected to benefit the businessman who assisted Khan and Bibi in setting up a university.

Bushra Bibi, a trustee of the Al-Qadir Trust, was accused of profiting from the settlement, including acquiring 458 kanals of land for the establishment of Al-Qadir University in Jhelum.
