Following the state intelligence department report, the Maharashtra Home Department has upgraded the security of Amruta Fadnavis, wife of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, from X to Y+. She has also been allotted a traffic clearance vehicle.
Amruta Fadnavis will now have the privilege of round-the-clock security of five policemen and an escort vehicle.
Devendra Fadnavis, however, has clarified that his wife had not applied for a security upgrade. He maintained that the High Power Committee has provided security in view of the possibility of a threat.
The Deputy Chief Minister has said that the entire Thackeray family and many other private individuals had been provided traffic clearance vehicles in the past. He said the security cover is provided to individuals based on threat perception.
Amruta Fadanvis is yet to use the newly allotted traffic clearance vehicle though necessary instructions to the traffic authorities have been sent by the Mumbai Police’s Protection and Security Department.
Normally, traffic clearance vehicles are usually given only to people holding constitutional positions. Rashmi Thackeray (former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray’s wife) and Tejas Thackeray were allotted two escort vehicles in the past. Aditya Thackeray refused to comment.
Amruta Fadnavis was provided X category (with escort) security cover during the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. Devendra Fadnavis was the leader of opposition then. Within months of the formation of the Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis government in June, the decision was taken to downgrade the security cover of several MVA leaders.
