Art Historian Claims to Identify Landscape in Mona Lisa

| Updated: May 13, 2024 12:51

The landscape behind one of the world’s most famous paintings, the Mona Lisa, is identified if one believes the geologist and Renaissance art historian Ann Pizzorusso. The euphoric historian has claimed that Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece depicts Lecco, a small town in the Lombardy region of northern Italy.

Ann Pizzorusso claims that the Azzone Visconti bridge, the southwestern Alps overlooking the area, and Lake Garlate are clearly recognizable in the painting. It is documented that Leonardo da Vinci visited the place 500 years ago. The iconic painting was painted sometime between 1503 and 1519. Known for its enigmatic smile, this small painting, an iconic piece of art, is housed at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

The historian also pointed out that what corroborates her theory is the fact that rocks are painted in grey-white by the Maestro, providing a hint at the limestone rocks present at the place.

Leonardo Da Vinci (15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519) was an Italian painter during the Renaissance. He was also a scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, sculptor, architect, botanist, musician, and writer. His other famous works include “The Last Supper” and ” The Vitruvian Man.”
