Biryani Dominates Swiggy’s Year-End Report for 2024

| Updated: December 23, 2024 21:10

Swiggy has unveiled its year-end report for 2024, offering insights into food trends observed across India between January 01 and November 22, 2024. As in previous years, biryani retained its title as the most popular dish ordered via the platform, with a staggering 83 million orders recorded. This equates to an average of 158 biryanis ordered every minute or roughly two every second.

The report highlights chicken biryani as the most favoured variant, with 49 million orders logged. Southern states led the demand for this dish, with Hyderabad topping the “Biryani Leaderboard” at 9.7 million orders. Bengaluru followed with 7.7 million orders and Chennai recorded 4.6 million.

Dosa was the second most popular dish on Swiggy, with 23 million orders this year.

Meanwhile, biryani emerged as a preferred late-night option, ranking second for midnight cravings between 12 am and 2 am, just behind chicken burgers. The dish was also a top choice for train travellers, facilitated by Swiggy’s partnership with IRCTC, which enables food delivery at specific stations.

Swiggy has provided further insights into biryani’s popularity during special occasions. During Ramadan 2024, six million plates of biryani were ordered via the platform, with Hyderabad alone accounting for over a million orders. A noteworthy instance involved a Swiggy user in Kolkata who marked the start of the year with a biryani order at 4.01 am on January 01.

This trend is consistent with data from rival platform Zomato, which reported biryani as the most sought-after dish in its 2023 year-end report and revealed it was the top choice for New Year’s Eve celebrations last year.
