The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received donations exceeding Rs 2,604.74 crore during 2023-24, while the Congress gained Rs 281.38 crore, as per the contribution reports released by the Election Commission.
Prior to the Lok Sabha elections on March 31, 2024, the donations mentioned in the reports were still being collected.
The Congress claimed to have collected over Rs 146 crore in 2018–19, while the BJP announced donations of over Rs 740 crore ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The BJP received more than Rs 127 crore from Triumph Electoral Trust and more than Rs 17 lakh from Einzigartig Electoral Trust in 2023–2024, in addition to more than Rs 723 crore from Prudent Electoral Trust.
The Prudent Electoral Trust, the Congress’s only trust contributor, gave the party more than Rs 150 crore.
Notably, the Congress got a total of Rs 1.38 lakh in donations from a number of prominent figures, including Digvijaya Singh, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K C Venugopal, and Sonia Gandhi.
“Happy Birthday to our leader–JKB” was the heading of several donations given to the Congress.
Donations obtained through electoral bonds are not included in the contributions reported by the Congress or the BJP since they must be disclosed in the party’s annual audit reports rather than contribution statements.
Over Rs 11.06 crore was donated to the Aam Aadmi Party, an official national party, during the fiscal year.
