The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to return to power in Delhi after 27 years, securing a decisive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections. As of 2:45 pm on Saturday, the BJP had won 13 seats and was leading in 34 others, crossing the halfway mark of 36 in the 70-member assembly.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, had won 11 seats and was leading in 12 others.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the victory, attributing it to governance and development. In a post on X, he expressed gratitude to Delhi’s voters for their overwhelming support.
“People’s power is supreme! Development and good governance have won,” he wrote.
Modi assured that the BJP-led government would focus on the capital’s all-round progress. “We guarantee that we will leave no stone unturned to ensure the all-round development of Delhi and to make the lives of its people better. Along with this, we will also ensure that Delhi plays an important role in building a developed India,” he said.
Arvind Kejriwal conceded defeat and congratulated the BJP on its victory. “We accept the mandate of the people with great humility. I congratulate the BJP for this victory and I hope they will fulfil all the promises for which people have voted them,” he said in a video message.
He also highlighted his party’s achievements over the past decade, particularly in health, education, and infrastructure, and pledged to serve as a constructive opposition.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the election outcome as the beginning of a new era for Delhi. “The rule of lies has ended in Delhi. This is the beginning of a new era of development and trust,” he said in a post on X.
He added, “Delhi ke Dil mein Modi (Modi in the heart of Delhi).” Shah also thanked voters for their support and affirmed the BJP’s commitment to fulfilling its promises.
“This is a victory of ‘Modi ki Guarantee’ and the faith of Delhiites in Modiji’s vision of development. Under the leadership of Modi ji, BJP is determined to fulfil all its promises and make Delhi the number-1 capital of the world.”
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh reacted to the results, stating that they reflected a rejection of Kejriwal’s leadership rather than an endorsement of the Prime Minister’s policies.
“The 2025 Delhi Vidhan Sabha election results reflect nothing more than a referendum on Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party. After all, at the height of the PM’s popularity in 2015 and 2020, AAP had won decisively in Delhi. This shows that, rather than being vindication of the policies of the PM, this vote is a rejection of Arvind Kejriwal’s politics of deceit, deception, and vastly exaggerated claims of achievement,” Ramesh said.
He also noted that while Congress had not won any seats, it had increased its vote share and would aim for a comeback in future elections.
“The Congress was expecting to do better. It has, however, increased its vote share. The campaign of the Congress was vigorous. It may not be in the Assembly, but it is definitely a presence in Delhi, a presence that will be expanded electorally with the sustained efforts of lakhs of Congress workers. There will be a Congress government once again in Delhi in 2030.”
With the BJP securing a strong mandate, the party is set to form the government in Delhi, marking the end of the AAP’s decade-long rule in the capital.
