A web of deceit and political strife is gripping Gujarat. On one side, a grieving widow was cheated of over Rs 14 lakh by fake Aghoris claiming to lift black magic curses. Aghoris are a sect of ascetic Shaivite sadhus who practice a unique and extreme form of Hinduism.
On the other hand, BJP leaders are battling openly over tribal loyalties and local development issues. Both stories show how fear, ambition, and mistrust drive people into difficult situations.
In Ahmedabad, 41-year-old Shabnam Mohammad Hussain lost her son and husband suddenly. Searching for answers, she found YouTube channels of “Tantrik Baba” and “Specialist Black Magic Karibaba Molanaji.”
According to a report, she called them to understand the deaths. They told her that her home was “cursed by black magic.” They said she needed aghori rituals to remove it. The accused kept demanding more money.
When a human sacrifice was suggested, she said she had none.
They then asked for four tantriks to perform the ritual at Rs 2.3 lakh each — Rs 9.2 lakh total. She paid that on April 22. Later, they said she had to pay Rs 3.15 lakh more for a ritual involving a black snake at a cemetery.
They allegedly warned she would die if she refused. Shabnam took loans and paid them Rs 14.18 lakh in total.
She finally filed a complaint at Vejalpur police station. The FIR names Ram Pratap Dhanraj Bhargav and Gurumata alias Vijendradevi. They face charges of extortion, cheating, and abetment.
PI RM Chauhan said that since the complainant had only spoken to the accused over the phone, the investigation was ongoing and they believed the accused might be in Maharashtra or Rajasthan. He added that teams had been dispatched to look for and apprehend them.
Rift in BJP
Meanwhile, in Gujarat’s political scene, tensions are rising inside the BJP.
Bharuch MP Mansukh Vasava accused Nandod MLA Darshana Deshmukh of supporting AAP leader Chaitar Vasava.
Chaitar had held a padyatra demanding urgent repair of a 14-km road in Junaraj village.
Mansukh claimed that Deshmukh was siding with Chaitar in a desperate attempt to bring him into the BJP.
He said she was giving Chaitar lollipops to join the BJP and warned this would harm the party.
Deshmukh refused to respond directly but said she did not need to explain herself. She added that the BJP had proof of misdeeds by AAP leaders.
Deshmukh said the road under protest was already under government process and accused AAP of unnecessary drama to mislead voters. She noted that AAP leaders file RTIs seeking information about road contracts and then withdraw them, implying a hidden motive.
Chaitar denied Mansukh’s allegations, calling them baseless. He stated that neither BJP leaders nor Darshana Deshmukh had ever supported him and that coordination meetings with public representatives should not be considered political support.
Party insiders said that Chaitar’s rising popularity in tribal areas worried BJP veterans. Many young BJP tribal leaders come from the former Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP), where Chaitar also hails from.
Chaitar had cut Mansukh’s victory margin in 2024 by over two lakh votes.
Mansukh had publicly accused party colleagues like former Narmada district BJP president Ghanshyam Patel and Jhagadia BJP MLA Ritesh Vasava—both imports from BTP—of working against him. Chaitar, known to have friendly relations with these leaders, is believed to be part of this factional divide.
The BJP also saw a split in local dairy elections. BJP MLA Arunsinh Rana had fielded a rival panel that won two seats, including an uncontested win by Prakash Desai, another BTP import.
Ghanshyam Patel was re-elected dairy chairman for a fourth consecutive term.
Two vice chairpersons were also elected, including a woman, Naramada Vasava. Some said this was to ensure tribal representation and to avoid questions being raised.
The BJP was currently tolerating Mansukh’s outbursts, seeing him as the only challenger to Chaitar, but with new leadership in the state, this might change.
Whether in the shadows of black magic scams or in fierce political battles, these stories reveal the cost of broken trust.
