Chhattisgarh: Amit Shah Praises Forces as Maoist with Rs 1 Cr Bounty Among 20 Killed

| Updated: January 21, 2025 16:57

A senior Maoist leader carrying a Rs 1 crore bounty was among 20 killed in a gunfight with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Gariaband district on Tuesday. The operation, which Union Home Minister Amit Shah described as a “major success,” took place in the Kularighat reserve forest near the Odisha border.

The deceased Maoist leader, Jayaram Reddy, also known as Chalapati, was a senior member of the central committee of the Maoists, the group’s highest decision-making body. Originally from Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district, Chalapati, aged around 60, was known for his operational expertise in the dense forests of Abujhmad in Bastar.

He recently shifted his base near the Odisha border due to intensified security operations in Bastar. His personal security detail consisted of eight to 10 guards.

The joint operation was conducted by the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), CoBRA unit, and Odisha’s Special Operation Group (SOG). Acting on intelligence regarding the presence of Maoists in the Kularighat forest, five kilometres from Odisha’s Nuapada district, the security forces launched the operation.

Officials reported recovering a significant cache of firearms, ammunition, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) from the site, including a self-loading rifle. A search operation is ongoing in the area to locate any remaining insurgents or hidden supplies.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, reaffirming his commitment to eliminating Maoists by March 2026, called the operation “another mighty blow to Naxalism.”

In a post on X, he stated, “Our security forces achieved major success towards building a Naxal-free Bharat. With our resolve and the joint efforts of our security forces, Naxalism is breathing its last today.”

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also commended the operation. “Under the double-engine government, Chhattisgarh will get rid of Maoists by March 2026,” he said. “This success of the soldiers is commendable. I salute their bravery.”

Chalapati was a high-value target, and his death marks a significant blow to the Maoist leadership. He was instrumental in strategising operations and was actively involved in extending the Maoists’ activities along the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border.

This year, about 40 Maoists have been killed in encounters in Chhattisgarh. In 2024, over 200 Maoists were killed, 217 of them in the Bastar region alone. Security forces also arrested more than 800 insurgents, while approximately 802 Maoists surrendered.

Despite the successes, the conflict has come at a cost. In 2024, 18 security personnel were killed in Maoist-related violence, along with 65 civilian casualties. The government has maintained its commitment to eradicating Maoist insurgency, with security forces continuing their operations in affected regions.
