Congress Defends Former VP Hamid Ansari Against BJP’s Attack After Explosive Allegations By Pakistani Journalist

| Updated: July 14, 2022 23:09

Jairam Ramesh, the Congress spokesperson has hit back to BJP for “Insinuations and innuendos by a spokesperson of BJP against Sonia Gandhi…and Hamid Ansari” and ” condemned in the strongest possible language”. “The insinuations and innuendos of the spokesperson of BJP are character assassination of the worst form.” he said.

Jairam Ramesh was referring to the explosive claim made by a Pakistani journalist Nusrat Mirza that he was invited by the former vice president of India Hamid Ansari and facilitated by him to visit several cities in India during 2005-11. He claimed that he passed on information he collected during the visits to the Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayayni.

Hamid Ansari, who was a career diplomat before becoming vice president of India fo two terms from 11 August 2007 to 10 August 2017 has also served as the Indian ambassador to Australia (1985–1989), Afghanistan (1989–1990), Iran (1990–1992), Saudi Arabia (1995–1999). He was India’s permanent representative at UN from1993 to1995. Hamid Ansari is great grand nephew of freedom fighter Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari who remained president of Indian national Congress from 1928 to 1929.

Hurt and humiliated Hamid Ansari was forced to write a note denying existance of any truth in the charges levelled against him by Pakistani journalist. Calling BJP’s charges a “litany of falsehood” Hamid Ansari stated, “I never invited him or met him.”

BJP through it’s spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia unleashed severe attack on the honour, dignity and credibility of former vice president of India. Bhatia said Mirza was given permission to visit seven cities, instead of the usual four visits allowed to a foreign visitor. “He says this information was used against India by the ISI to weaken India. India has been leading the campaign against terrorism, and the Congress government invited a person who was given information used against our country and its people.” Bhatia also accused the Congress, saying its leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi should come clean on the allegations.

Congress’ Jairam Ramesh reacted by saying that “It reflects sickness of mind and lack of any form of integrity whatsoever” He added that ” The levels that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party colleagues will stoop to debase public debate is staggering”.
