The designated emergency numbers to call the police have gone haywire in Gujarat that is causing trouble to complainants for long. The reason is a GPS glitch in the system. When people are trying to call on the numbers 100-112 for help, the calls are found to be routed to control rooms of other districts.
A man reportedly reached out to the police emergency number 100-112 from Ahmedabad-Bavla Highway after his car collided with stray cattle, expecting swift assistance. Instead, due to the glitch, his call connected to a control room in a different district. Without directly rerouting the call, the help desk person gave the number of the right control room to Patel and asked him to call there. The delay in getting the right help left Patel stranded and on the deserted highway at night.
The DGP Law & Order Shamshersingh has instructed SPs, CPs to reroute such calls to respective centres instead of asking the complainants to do so.
The emergency number, managed by EMRI Green Health Services on Naroda Kathwada Road, is designed to swiftly connect callers to local assistance. However, a persistent technical issue has been misrouting many of these calls, leaving distressed individuals without immediate help. The DGP has emphasised the need for a prompt solution.
The problem of cross connections due to the technical glitch is affecting many callers and emergency help is getting delayed,” the DGP said adding, “Instructions have been issued to all officials concerned to ensure the calls are immediately redirected to the appropriate district or city. The caller shouldn’t be burdened.”
The DGP has also stressed the need of recording details of such misrouted calls. The circular mentions this data should be entered into the CAD software. This will help quantify the extent of the problem and expedite its resolution.
“I’ve urged all CPs and SPs to oversee the rectification process, ensuring that those in need receive timely and appropriate assistance,” Shamshersingh said.
