India's Defence Ambitions

Rajkot, Gujarat: In a major boost to India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing, Macpower CNC Machines Limited, a Rajkot-based firm, has signed a Rs 100 crore Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government. This collaboration will see the establishment of a state-of-the-art facility for manufacturing CNC machines specifically designed for producing aerospace and defence equipment parts.

Macpower, already a leading supplier of CNC machines and technical know-how to defence and aerospace manufacturers, brings decades of expertise to the table. Chairman and Managing Director Rupesh Mehta stated, “We are one of the few Indian vendors licensed to manufacture defence and aerospace parts. Now, we’ll not only provide machines but also build custom-made models for this crucial sector.”

The MoU, signed during the pre-Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit 2024, paves the way for Macpower’s ambitious “Macpower Defence” project. Mehta revealed, “With the government’s focus on indigenous defence production, we see immense potential for growth. We’re in the process of identifying land near Rajkot to establish our new facility.”

Macpower boasts a proven track record, having supplied Rs 500 crore worth of parts and equipment to organizations like ISRO, HAL, and DRDO. Mehta added, “We have a backlog of orders and expect significant growth. This facility will be the first of its kind under the state’s new Aerospace & Defence Policy. We’re committed to building a robust and backward-integrated facility with an in-house foundry to ensure high-quality castings and patented technology.”

The Gujarat government’s District Industries Centre in Rajkot confirmed the approval of the MoU and highlighted the benefits Macpower will receive, including concessional land rates and tax exemptions under the state’s Aerospace and Defence Policy.

With a current annual turnover of Rs 250 crore and a capacity to manufacture 1,500 CNC machines annually, Macpower is poised to play a pivotal role in strengthening India’s defence manufacturing capabilities. The company plans to increase its capacity to 2,000 machines by 2024-25, further solidifying its position as a frontrunner in this critical sector.
