Rajkot, Gujarat: A seemingly harmless “good morning” message on WhatsApp turned into a nightmare for a 38-year-old agricultural trader from Jasdan, near Rajkot. The victim, Kalpesh Kanani, befriended an unknown woman on social media, leading to him being extorted for Rs 3 lakh.
Kanani received a message from a woman who identified herself as Kajal Pansuriya during a social function on February 27th. Though initially suspicious, a video call from the woman convinced him. The next day, she requested a ride from Jasdan to Rajkot, which Kanani agreed to provide.
While on the way, the woman asked Kanani to stop near Tramba crossroads. Four men emerged from another car, assaulted Kanani, and accused him of spending three days with the woman. They threatened to frame him for rape unless he paid Rs 3 lakh.
Frightened, Kanani contacted a friend and arranged for the cash to be delivered to the location designated by the gang. After receiving the money, the group fled the scene.
The Rajkot (rural) police’s local crime branch arrested the woman and six others after Kanani filed a complaint. The police seized Rs 5.65 lakh from the gang.
The investigation revealed that the gang obtained Kanani’s number from his social media profile, where he advertised car rental services. The arrested individuals include the mastermind, Jaypalsinh Rabari, Kismat Rabari, Ashok Rabari, Atul Koli, and Mahipatsinh Gohil. The identities of the two women involved are not being disclosed by the police.
