Gujarat Enters the ‘Rs 100 Crore Club’ in Traffic Challans in 2023

| Updated: February 10, 2024 16:54

In 2023, Gujarat is entering the ‘Rs 100 crore club’ in traffic challan amounts. Compared to Rs 98 crore and Rs 92 crore in 2021 and 2022, respectively, the state saw traffic police forces generating challans worth Rs 139 crore.

The annual rise is at 51%, making it the third highest among states with fines exceeding Rs 100 crore. Daily fines collected amount to Rs 38 lakh.

According to Nitin Gadkari, Union minister of road transport and highways, who shared the data in response to a Lok Sabha question by Gajanan Kirtikar, Gujarat police generated a total of 15.99 lakh challans. This translates to approximately 4,400 challans daily for violations, amounting to Rs 38 lakh. The average fine per challan is Rs 860.

Until January 29, data shows Gujarat police generated 1.28 lakh challans, resulting in fines totaling Rs 10.5 crore. Major cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot contributed the most to traffic fines.

A response from city police to the Gujarat High Court in December 2023 indicated 4.92 challans issued in the city last year, with 3.24 lakh being e-challans and 1.68 lakh issued on the spot. Traffic police filed 74,000 cases and recovered Rs 4.76 crore in penalties.

Dr. Pravin Kanabar, president of the Ahmedabad Traffic Consultative Committee (ATCC), acknowledges the enforcement and stricter fines but emphasizes that it cannot be the sole solution.
