In a major move aimed at improving supervision and strengthening national security, the Gujarat government has divided the areas along the International Border (IB) with Pakistan into two separate police ranges.
Until now, the entire border area was managed under the existing Border Range, which included Kutch, India’s largest district. With the new arrangement, a separate Banaskantha Range has been created. This means the eastern portion of Gujarat’s border with Pakistan will now come under the jurisdiction of a new Range Inspector General.
According to a senior police officer, a police range generally consists of three police districts. The officer said that the creation of the Banaskantha Range is intended to improve administration, coordination and monitoring in the sensitive border region.
The decision comes as part of a larger restructuring of Gujarat Police. The new Banaskantha Range has been formed after reorganising jurisdictions that were earlier linked with Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Gandhinagar, Surat, Rajkot, Junagadh, Bhavnagar, Dahod, Panchmahal and Border Range.
The current border policing structure dates back nearly three decades. On May 20, 1995, the Rajkot Range was divided, leading to the creation of the Border Range to specifically oversee Gujarat’s international land border with Pakistan. This border region mainly covers the desert areas of the Rann of Kutch and surrounding marshlands.
The international border stretch under Gujarat is approximately 512 kilometres long. Until now, the Border Range Inspector General had jurisdiction over Kutch (West), Kutch (East), Patan and Banaskantha districts, covering the entire Gujarat-Pakistan border.
According to the senior police officer quoted in the report, the reorganisation has been carried out to ensure better supervision of the border region and more effective policing in strategically important areas along the Pakistan border.
This restructuring is expected to help law enforcement agencies manage border security more efficiently while improving administrative control over one of India’s most sensitive frontier zones.
