Gujarat’s Denim Sector Reports Robust Growth Driven By Global Demand And Strategic Edge

| Updated: February 5, 2025 18:55

Gujarat’s denim industry has seen visible growth, buoyed by an increase in both domestic and international demand. The state’s reputation as India’s denim capital is further solidified as large-scale manufacturers and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) report a surge in revenues and denim volumes.

According to reports, Nandan Denim, one of the key players in the market, witnessed a substantial rise in its revenue operations, reaching Rs 2,498 crore in the first three quarters of FY 2025. This marks a 74% increase from the previous year’s figure of Rs 1,430 crore. Additionally, the fabric segment alone recorded an 8% growth, amounting to Rs 1,430 crore.

Managing Director of Nandan Denim, Jyotiprasad Chiripal, attributed this growth to improved capacity utilisation, financial management, and cost utilisation. He further noted that the decline in raw material costs, combined with the geopolitical uncertainties in Ukraine and Israel, has allowed Indian manufacturers to attract more clients from America and Europe.

“The geopolitical situation has influenced trade dynamics, benefiting Indian manufacturers,” he said.

Chiripal also highlighted that the company’s focus on technological upgrades, sustainable production practices, and strategic pricing has made its products more competitive in both quality and cost.

“We believe that Indian denim manufacturers are increasingly becoming strong contenders in the global export market, with India’s rich fabric heritage and robust manufacturing ecosystem contributing to this growth,” he stated.

“Most Western countries are looking to reduce their exposure to China and prefer Indian denim manufacturers,” he added.

In a similar development, Arvind Limited, another major player in the sector, reported a 12% rise in revenue, reaching Rs 294 crore, up from Rs 263 crore the previous year. The company also experienced a 19% increase in denim volume, with production rising to 12 million metres in the third quarter of FY 2025, compared to 10 million metres during the same period last year.

Arvind’s investor presentation indicated that the company’s revenue is projected to grow from Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 1,600 crore by the end of FY 2025.

The growth is not confined to large manufacturers. SME denim producers are also experiencing an uptick in business.

A manufacturer based in Narol shared his perspective on the trend: “Shifting global sourcing patterns, increased focus on sustainability, and India’s competitive production costs are all contributing factors to the growth.”

He added that rising consumer purchasing power and a shift towards casual and comfortable clothing have spurred an increase in domestic retail consumption.

Interestingly, denim revenues have risen despite a decline in price realisation, attributed to the reduction in cotton prices during the third quarter. This price shift has not deterred growth, with manufacturers continuing to see strong demand both at home and abroad.
