The Ministry of Civil Aviation has formed a high-level multi-disciplinary committee to examine the causes of the Air India Flight AI-171 crash and to suggest long-term safety measures.
In a post on X, the ministry stated that the committee would evaluate the chain of events that led to the accident and review existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and aviation safety protocols. “The Committee will not be a substitute to other enquiries being conducted by relevant organisations but will focus on formulating SOPs for preventing and handling such occurrences in the future,” the ministry clarified.
The panel, officials said, will function independently and could propose a robust framework to better manage and prevent similar aviation disasters.
According to reports, aviation authorities have initiated a detailed technical probe to determine the cause of the crash. Forensic experts are examining the aircraft debris.
Additionally, Air India and the Indian government are looking at several aspects of the crash including issues linked to its engine thrust, flaps, and why the landing gear remained open and the plane came down within movements of taking off.
The probe is also looking at whether Air India was at fault, including on maintenance issues
Meanwhile, a team of the National Security Guard (NSG) has been deployed at the site of the crash to assist other agencies in relief operations. This team does not have any investigative powers.
Central agencies, including the National Investigation Agency, visited the crash yesterday. According to a national daily, foul play has not been ruled out, but as of now the focus is on gathering flight data and evidence to understand the possible technical and human factors that caused the tragedy.
