A 24-year-old student of South Calcutta Law College has lodged a detailed complaint revealing that she was gang-raped despite constant pleas and begging to let her go.
She alleged that the accused filmed the assault and even the guard, allegedly one of the witnesses, watched powerlessly but didn’t help.
She mentioned that she had arrived at the college around 12 pm on Wednesday to fill out examination-related forms. She initially sat inside the college union room. It was later alleged that the accused instructed the main college gate to be locked. The complainant said she was raped inside the security guard’s room on the campus.
According to her statement, the main accused, 31-year-old Monojit Mishra, turned vindictive when she rejected his marriage proposal.
The woman said in her complaint that Mishra, a former student and, according to reports, the current general secretary of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), relentlessly pressured her into marrying him.
Despite his aggressive pursuit, she refused, citing an existing relationship.
According to reports, she alleged that he intimidated her with threats. He warned that if she didn’t relent, he would harm his boyfriend. Then, he threated to implicate her parents in false cases. When nothing worked, he allegedly confined her inside the college and sexually assaulted her with the help of two others; Zaib Ahmed, 19, a first-year student, and 20-year-old Pramit Mukherjee, another student.
“He tried to force me with the intention of having sex. I denied and fought back by not letting him do anything and pushing him back. I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend and I love my boyfriend. But he did not agree,” she was quoted as saying by a certain section of the media.
She added that she begged him to let her go. “I touched his feet but he didn’t let me go. They again took me to the room. They took me to the guard room forcefully, he undressed me and started forcefully raping me,” she said in the complaint, adding that the other two stood and watched.
“I asked them to take me to hospital but they were not helping me. They had locked the main gate of the college and the guard was helpless and did not help.”
She claimed that she was warned with dire consequences if she revealed their actions. To ensure, she remained silent, they filmed the assault. “He recorded two videos of mine when he was raping me. He threatened me to show these videos to everyone if I did not cooperate,” she said.
“I need justice,” her complaint read.
Later that night, the survivor claimed she was finally permitted to leave the premises, but only after being threatened with more harm.
Additionally, the woman claimed that she was asked to demonstrate her allegiance to the Trinamool Congress’ student wing. She claimed in her complaint that she and seven other people were summoned to the union room on campus prior to being gang-raped, where Mishra spoke of his personal life and authority.
Reports added that one of the other accused, Pramit Mukherjee, had called her outside and questioned her about her loyalty towards Monojit and the unit. She explained that she had assured him of her commitment to both Monojit and the team, as she had been appointed the girls’ secretary, and had thus pledged her support to the unit. When she returned to the union room, Monojit inquired whether Pramit had explained everything to her. She responded by affirming that he had, and assured Monojit not to worry, reaffirming her dedication to the unit.
The incident reportedly took place on the college premises between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm on June 25. The police carried out a preliminary medical examination of the survivor, recorded witness statements, and secured the location of the incident for a pending forensic examination.
The three have been arrested following the registration of an FIR at the Kasba Police Station.
