ICC Ranking : India Is #1Test Cricket Team

| Updated: February 15, 2023 16:11

India climbed to the top of the latest ICC Test rankings after defeating Australia in Nagpur. The comprehensive victory has given Rohit Sharma and Co 115 points, four more than the second-placed Australians.

England is currently in third place with 106 points, but they will have an opportunity to improve their position when they face New Zealand in a Test series beginning February 16. The victory also meant that the Indian spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja improved their rankings significantly with impressive spells on a pitch that aided their bowling.

The Indian cricket team is currently topping the rankings in all three formats of the sport.

Ashwin has moved closer to the top of the bowlers’ rankings, while Jadeja has moved higher. The two spinners took a combined 15 wickets to keep the Aussie batsmen in check.

Ashwin took 5/37 in the second innings, adding to his earlier 3/42 total. Australia’s Pat Cummins currently leads the rankings, but Ashwin is only 21 rating points behind him.

According to the ICC official website, West Indies spinner Gudakesh Motie announced himself with 19 wickets in two Tests against Zimbabwe and has surged 77 places to be ranked 46th after only three Tests.  India captain Rohit Sharma advanced his position as well, with his brilliant century against Australia in Nagpur moving him from tenth to eighth place.

Rohit came to the top edge after Australia were all out for 177 in their first innings, then made the wicket look all but tame with an assured 120 that set the tone for the rest of the match.

The upcoming Test against Australia in New Delhi will be crucial, with India hoping to maintain their lead and increase their chances of reaching the World Test Championship final.
