Three people found guilty of spying for Israel’s intelligence service, Mossad, were put to death in Iran, according to the judiciary’s Mizan news agency. The executions happened barely one day after Iran and Israel agreed to a truce mediated by the United States after 12 days of intense conflict.
According to Mizan, the three men, who were hanged, were found guilty of collaborating with Mossad and smuggling equipment used in the assassination of an unnamed figure. No other information was given. Reports have also emerged about 700 people detained in Iran on suspicion of having connections to Israel.
The developments unfold against the backdrop of a long-standing and deeply entrenched conflict between Iran and Israel. Over the years, Iran has executed several individuals convicted of collaborating with Mossad and facilitating Israeli intelligence operations on Iranian soil.
Following the US’s military intervention on Israel’s behalf, which involved destroying three Iranian nuclear sites—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—the shaky truce deal was reached. But the ceasefire got off to a rough start as Tehran and Tel Aviv accused one another of breaking the agreement.
Despite the accusations and instability, US President Donald Trump affirmed that the ceasefire was holding. Writing on Truth Social, he said: “Israel is not going to attack Iran. All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly ‘plane wave’ to Iran. Nobody will be hurt, the ceasefire is in effect.”
The recent flare-up was triggered by Israel’s allegations that Iran was advancing rapidly toward developing nuclear weapons—a claim Iran has vehemently denied.
