In a chilling revelation that underscores the grave national security threat looming over the northern belt of India, Punjab Police have apprehended an alleged spy deeply embedded within a cross-border espionage network tied to Pakistan’s notorious intelligence agency, the ISI, and a top Khalistani terrorist, Gopal Singh Chawla. The accused, Gagandeep Singh, has allegedly leaked sensitive, classified intelligence—including troop deployments and strategic location details—to hostile foreign operatives, jeopardising critical military operations.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that Gagandeep Singh had been in touch with Pakistan-based Khalistani terrorist Gopal Singh Chawla for the past five years, through whom he was introduced to the Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs). He also received payments from PIOs via Indian channels,” Gaurav Yadav, Director General of Punjab Police, was quoted as saying.
The arrest of Gagandeep Singh comes amid a widening dragnet following the brutal Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 Indian citizens were killed by Pakistan-based terrorists.
In the wake of that atrocity, Operation Sindoor—India’s firm retaliatory action—was launched, during which Gagandeep allegedly continued his espionage activities in collaboration with ISI handlers and the fugitive Khalistani leader.
A mobile phone recovered from the accused has provided damning evidence. According to police sources, the device contained highly sensitive material outlining intelligence passed to Pakistani agents, and revealed that Singh had maintained contact with over 20 ISI operatives. “Thorough financial and technical investigations are underway to trace other linkages and establish the full scope of this espionage network,” the DGP added.
The Punjab Police have further alleged that Gopal Singh Chawla, currently residing in Pakistan, is not merely a passive figurehead but an active conspirator. Chawla, operating hand-in-glove with the ISI, is believed to be running an extensive spying operation on Indian soil, with a sharp focus during high-tension periods such as Operation Sindoor.
This arrest is part of a larger crackdown sweeping across northern India.
According to reports, in the past two weeks alone, over a dozen individuals have been taken into custody from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh as intelligence and law enforcement agencies cracked a Pakistan-backed spy network.
Among those detained are two women—Jyoti Malhotra, a social media influencer from Haryana with 3.77 lakh YouTube subscribers and 1.33 lakh Instagram followers, and 31-year-old Guzala from Punjab. Alarmingly, even a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel has been arrested in connection with espionage activities.
