| Updated: May 2, 2022 13:21

Independent Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani, who was finally granted bail by Assam Police in two separate cases, will be reaching Ahmedabad by Tuesday evening. The Dalit leader and activist will then address a rally of his supporters at Juna Vadej.

According to the sources, Mevani and his supporters have organized a meeting named ‘Satyamev Jayate Jan Sabha’ that will be held at Ramapir No Tekro in Juna Vadaj. Prior to the meeting, Mevani will pay tribute to Babasaheb Ambedkar by laying flowers at his statue in Sarangpur.

Jignesh Mevani has been raising his voice agaisnt the ruling party in the state, on behalf opf the Dalit community as well as those that belong to other lower classes in the society. Mevani has continously highlighted the plight of these communities who are still facing discriminations in the villages. Mevani led a major Dalit movement in Gujarat after the Una tragedy where seven boys from the community were flogged and dragged on the streets before being thrown in front of a police station in July 2016.

Last month, Mevani was arerested by the Assam police as a BJP leader in the state fied a case against him over a tweet aginst Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While dealing with this arrest and defending his tweet, Mevani got embroiled in another case when a police constable accused him of assaulting her. His arrest fueled state-wide protests in Guajart where his supporters and other community bearers held several agitations, demanding Mavani’s freedom.

After weeks of fight, a court in Assam has finally granted Mevani bail and allowed him to return to Gujarat.
