| Updated: June 1, 2022 23:18

Kolkata Police has registered a case of unnatural death over the demise of popular Bollywood singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK. The versatile singer died hours after a concert performance in Kolkata, where he sang for nearly 90 minutes and live crooned 20 songs. The 53-year-old took ill while performing and complained about some uneasiness. Videos and eyewitness statements have raised questions about the arrangements at the venue, where air-conditioning was allegedly not working. In fact, a post has come to light which shows KK complaining about it being too hot. In the second video, he is seen asking for a towel to wipe off the profuse sweating:

CCTV footage has also emerged showing KK walk the corridors of the Kolkata hotel before he was taken to the hospital after he reportedly complained of chest pain. In fact, initial probe reveals that the 53-year-old singer, who was on a two-day tour to Kolkata to perform at two college programmes, was “almost mobbed” by fan followers at the hotel where he returned after performing at Nazrul Mancha auditorium.

“The singer had allowed a couple of fans to click snaps with him. However, he was feeling unwell and refused to carry on with the selfie session. He left the lobby and then went upstairs where he reportedly stumbled and fell on the floor. People who were with him informed the hotel authorities,” an investigating officer briefed the media.

KK was then rushed to a private hospital where he was declared “brought dead” by doctors, he said, adding that probably because of the fall, the singer had two injuries, one on the left side of his forehead and another on his lips. Doctors at the hospital said they suspected “cardiac arrest” to be the cause of the death.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday condoled KK’s death. While speaking at a programme in Bankura, said she has cut short her tour and will try to reach Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata and pay her last respects. The state police have been instructed to honor the singer with a gun salute.

The singer had also performed at Nazrul Mancha on Monday evening in a concert organised by Vivekananda College. He was scheduled to return to New Delhi on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Bollywood stars, singers and musicians united in pouring out their grief on social media. The sudden void left by KK will remain irreplaceable.
