Lalduhoma: First MP And First MLA Charged Under Anti-Defection Law

A former IPS Officer, Lalduhoma contested and won his first election on Indian National Congress ticket for the sole parliamentary seat in 1984. Born in 1949, Laduhoma was in the security service of the slain Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and also secretary of the organising committee of the 1982 Asian Games, chaired by Rajiv Gandhi, before jumping into the electoral politics. .

President of Zoram Nationalist Party, Lalduhoma is also founder of the same. Zoram Nationalist Party is a key contituent in the coalition named Zoram People’s Movement. Laduhoma was chosen as the first Chief Ministerial candidate in the 2018 Mizoram Legislative Assembly election. laduhoma won on both the seats he contested, Aizawl West I and Serchhip constituencies. However, he chose to represent Serchhip.

Laduhoma also has the dubious distiction of becoming the first Member of the Legislative Assembly in India as well as Memebr of parliament to have been disqualified on the charges of breaching anti-defection law.

He was disqualified from the parliament upon leaving Indian National Congress, thus bcecoming the first MP to be discharged upon anti-defection law in India. Similarly, in 2020 he was disqualified for breaching anti-defection law in assembly. He was re-elected from the same Serchhip constituency in a by-election in 2021.

Lalduhoma led the Zoram Nationalist Party was formerly known as Mizo National Front (Nationalist) formed in 1997 through a split in the Mizo National Front.
