Mamata Banerjee Expresses Displeasure Over Life Sentence in RG Kar Case

| Updated: January 20, 2025 18:33

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has voiced her dissatisfaction over the sentencing of Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment till death in the RG Kar rape and murder case. The Sealdah court delivered the sentence on Monday, sparking discontent from Banerjee, who had been vocal in demanding the death penalty for the convict.

“I am not satisfied… All of us demanded the death sentence, but the court gave life imprisonment,” Banerjee remarked, responding to the Sealdah court’s judgement.

The Chief Minister made the comments while addressing reporters in Murshidabad district, where she also criticised the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for its handling of the probe.

She alleged that the investigation had been “forcibly” taken away from the Kolkata Police and expressed confidence that the state police would have secured a death penalty if allowed to handle the case.

“All of us had demanded a death sentence, but the court has given a life term until death. The case was forcibly taken from us. Had it been with the (Kolkata) police, we would have ensured that he was served a death sentence,” Banerjee claimed.

Continuing her criticism of the probe, she added, “We don’t know how the investigation was conducted. In many similar cases that were probed by the state police, the death penalty was ensured. I am not satisfied.”

The Sealdah court, presided over by Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das, delivered its sentence on Monday after having found Roy guilty on Saturday. Judge Das stated that the crime, though heinous, did not meet the criteria for the “rarest of the rare” category, which would warrant a death sentence.

Roy was convicted of raping and murdering the postgraduate trainee doctor on August 9 last year, a case that provoked unprecedented outrage and calls for justice nationwide.
