Meghalaya Murder: Sonam’s Brother Claims Raj Tied Rakhi To Her

| Updated: June 11, 2025 16:07

The brother of Sonam Raghuvanshi — accused of orchestrating the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi — has broken his silence, rejecting claims of a romantic relationship between her and co-accused Raj Kushwaha.

Govind Raghuvanshi told reporters in Indore after meeting Raja’s mother that there was no affair between Sonam and Raj. She has been tying him rakhi for the past three years and Raj worked for their family and was like a younger brother to her, he said, adding that he always addressed Sonam as didi.

He also claimed that Sonam had never informed their mother about her association with Raj Kushwaha. “Had we known, we would have never allowed this to happen,” he said.

Govind also answered questions about the hurried nature of Sonam and Raja’s wedding, stating the “date was decided based on a mahurat given by a priest”. While distancing the family from the crime, he demanded strict action. “Whoever committed the murder must be punished — even hanged,” he said.

He further claimed that while Sonam hasn’t confessed to the murder, the evidence that has emerged so far points to her direct involvement.

“According to the evidence found so far, I am 100% sure that she has committed this murder. All the accused in this case are related to Raj Kushwaha. We have broken our ties with Sonam Raghuvanshi. I apologise to Raja’s family,” he said.

Sonam and Raja were married on May 11 in Indore and went to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. On May 23, the couple checked out of a homestay in Nongriat village. Ten days later, Raja’s body was discovered in a 200-foot-deep gorge, 20 km away.

Police said Raja was murdered by three men — Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi — allegedly hired by Raj Kushwaha, who was reportedly in contact with Sonam. All four accused are in police custody.

Sonam disappeared after the incident but resurfaced on June 8 and surrendered at a police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. An autopsy revealed that Raja had been attacked twice with a sharp weapon — once from the front and once from behind.
