Netflix Unveils Blockbuster December Line-up

| Updated: December 1, 2024 19:30

Netflix is closing 2024 with a bang, unveiling a star-studded slate of films, series and specials to keep viewers entertained throughout December.

From Keira Knightley’s return to television to Sabrina Carpenter’s festive spectacular and Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of a legendary opera singer, the streaming giant has something for everyone.

Keira Knightley Makes Her Return in Black Doves

After a quiet period away from the spotlight, Keira Knightley is set to make a triumphant return to the small screen in Black Doves, a high-stakes spy thriller launching on December 5.

Black Doves

Knightley stars as Helen Webb, a seemingly ordinary wife and mother with a dangerous secret: she’s a spy working for the shadowy organisation known as the Black Doves. When her lover, played by Warrior star Andrew Koji, is murdered, Helen is thrust into a perilous quest for vengeance. Created by Joe Barton, the mind behind Giri/Haji, the series also stars Sarah Lancashire and Ben Whishaw.

Netflix is so confident in the show’s success that it has already renewed Black Doves for a second season, even before its premiere.

Sabrina Carpenter Ushers in Festive Season with A Nonsense Christmas

Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter, fresh off the success of her chart-topping singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” is bringing holiday cheer with A Nonsense Christmas, debuting on December 6. The musical extravaganza will feature Carpenter alongside a star-studded line-up, including Chappell Roan, Tyla, Shania Twain, Kali Uchis, Quinta Brunson, Cara Delevingne and Sean Astin.

A Nonsense Christmas

Expect a mix of comedy, heart-warming moments and festive tunes as Carpenter and her celebrity guests get everyone in the holiday spirit.

Angelina Jolie Transforms into Maria Callas in Maria

Releasing on December 11, Pablo Larraín’s Maria is already generating awards buzz. The film stars Angelina Jolie as legendary opera singer Maria Callas, focusing on the final week of her life. The biopic premiered to rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival, where it received an eight-minute standing ovation.

Maria

Maria is the third instalment in Larraín’s trilogy of biopics about iconic women, following Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021). With stunning cinematography and a powerhouse performance from Jolie, Maria is poised to be a standout this awards season.

Tyler Perry Brings Untold WWII History to Life in The Six Triple Eight

Tyler Perry’s latest project, The Six Triple Eight, tells the inspiring true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the only all-women, all-Black unit deployed overseas during World War II.

The Six Triple Eight

Premiering on December 20, the film stars Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Dean Norris, Sam Waterston and Oprah Winfrey. The battalion’s mission to deliver millions of backlogged letters to soldiers on the frontlines highlights an often-overlooked chapter in military history.

NFL on Christmas: Beyoncé Headlines Netflix’s First Live Sports Broadcast

Netflix is venturing into live sports on December 25 with a double-header of NFL games. The Baltimore Ravens face off against the Houston Texans, followed by the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers.

To mark the occasion, Beyoncé will perform during halftime of the Ravens-Texans game in her hometown of Houston. After previous technical issues with live events like the Love Is Blind reunion and the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight, Netflix is under pressure to deliver a seamless experience for this high-stakes broadcast.

The Return of Squid Game – Season 2

The long-awaited second season of Squid Game drops on December 26. The first season, released in 2021, became a global sensation and remains Netflix’s most-watched series of all time. It earned 14 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, making it the first non-English-language show to achieve this feat.

Squid Game (Season 2)

Season two sees the return of Gi-hun (Lee Jung-Jae), also known as Player 456, as he seeks to dismantle the deadly survival game once and for all. Fans can expect even more twists, psychological tension and high-stakes drama.

Additional December Highlights

In addition to original content, Netflix will expand its library with a range of popular films, including:

  • Daddy Day Care
  • The Happytime Murders
  • Little
  • Midway
  • Project X
  • We’re the Millers
  • Zero Dark Thirty
  • Compliance

With an impressive line-up of new releases, Netflix is set to dominate the holiday viewing landscape, offering something for every taste and interest.
