NFSU Expands, Strengthening Forensic Science Access in 17 States

Gandhinagar, India: The National Forensic Science University (NFSU), renowned for its specialized education in forensic science, is embarking on a significant expansion. Aiming to double its presence across India by December 2024, NFSU plans to establish eight new campuses, bringing its total to an impressive 17.

This ambitious move stems from the university’s burgeoning reputation, both domestically and internationally. The NFSU campus in Gandhinagar has garnered global attention, with six countries expressing interest in hosting their own campus. This international recognition further solidifies NFSU’s position as a leader in forensic science education.

The recent 5th International and 44th National All India Criminology Conference held in Gandhinagar served as a pivotal event. This gathering of prominent political and forensic experts underscored the crucial role of forensic science in the criminal justice system. Notably, the Union Home Minister announced plans for a new NFSU campus, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening forensic science capabilities.

“Given the high demand for our specialized education, we are rapidly expanding to meet the needs of both India and the international community,” shared Dr. Shankarao Junare, Campus Director of NFSU Gandhinagar. This expansion aligns with the Ministry of Home Affairs’ directive to bolster the criminal justice system.

Dr. Junare confirmed that campuses in Jammu, Nagpur-Maharashtra, and Panchkula, Haryana have already been approved. Expansion plans are also underway for Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, ensuring a wider geographical reach throughout India.

However, NFSU’s ambitions extend beyond national borders. “We are actively exploring international proposals from Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, Ethiopia, Oman, and Rwanda,” Dr. Junare added, with detailed planning for these potential campuses set to begin in 2025.

Currently, NFSU operates ten campuses – nine spread across India and one in Uganda, showcasing its diverse geographical presence. With its ambitious expansion plans, NFSU is poised to further solidify its position as a global leader in forensic science education, contributing significantly to a stronger and more efficient criminal justice system worldwide.
