The Jamnagar municipal health system scrambled to damage control mode after it was found that the resident who tested positive for the Omicron variant, along with his wife and brother-in-law, offered tuition classes to children at his residence for two days.

The man had landed in Jamnagar from Zimbabwe on November 28. On a complaint from a local corporator that children were attending tuitions at the house on Morkanda Road, outside Kalawad Naka, the municipal health system has identified nine children who attended these tuitions. ‘Necessary health action’ has been initiated, according to sources.

The man, a senior citizen who flew to Ahmedabad from Zimbabwe via Dubai, reportedly fell victim to the Omicron variant after a positive coronavirus test. Satellite City Society, where the family lives, has been declared a street containment zone. Two more people have been declared positive in the society, now in Omicron focus across the state.

Corporator Jenab Khafi had received complaints about the tuition classes in the society from other residents of the society. “I immediately called up the municipal commissioner and the health officer. Yesterday, the health team visited the homes of the seven children. The children and their families have been tested and results are being awaited.”

Municipal health officer Rujuta Joshi said that the children attending the tuitions were students of Standard IX and X. “The team will work today to identify and test other children,” he said. A door-to-door survey was conducted in 44 houses in Lagat Society yesterday, in which no symptoms were found in any person, Joshi added.
