Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given the Indian Armed Forces full operational freedom to strike back against Pakistan in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 civilian lives.
According to reports, the directive came during a 90-minute high-level meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence on Tuesday, attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, NSA Ajit Doval, CDS General Anil Chauhan, and the chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Government sources, the report claimed, said India’s Prime Minister expressed full confidence in the military and stressed that a “crushing blow” to terrorism is a matter of national resolve. The armed forces now have full autonomy over how, when, and where to strike.
PM Modi gave the Indian Armed Forces “complete freedom to decide on the mode, targets, and timing” of India’s military response.
The meeting preceded Wednesday’s Cabinet Committee on Security session and followed Defence Minister Singh’s briefing to the PM on the evolving security situation.
In his latest Mann Ki Baat address, Modi vowed the “harshest response” against those behind the Pahalgam carnage, assuring justice for victims’ families.
India has also launched a diplomatic offensive against Pakistan, suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, halting visa issuance, and closing the Attari land crossing. In retaliation, Pakistan has shut its airspace to Indian aircraft and suspended bilateral trade.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s information minister Attatullah Tarar claimed to have “credible evidence” of an Indian military strike in the country within the next 24-36 hours.
“Pakistan has credible intelligence that India intends carrying out military action against Pakistan in the next 24-36 hours on the pretext of baseless and concocted allegations of involvement in the Pahalgam incident,” Tarar said in a post on X.
Tarar added that India had “self-assumed” the role of judge, jury and executioner in its accusations against Pakistan in connection with the attack.
However, India remains firm about Pakistani elements involved in the Pahalgam terror attack.
