Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu on Thursday advanced to the quarterfinals of the India Open 2025 after securing a dominant win over Japan’s Manami Suizu in the second round. The 29-year-old defeated Suizu by 21-15, 21-13 in a 46-minute encounter at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
Sindhu, who was playing her first event after her marriage, asserted her dominance early in the match, taking an 11-6 lead at the break.
She maintained control in the first game, finishing 21-15. In the second game, the Hyderabad-born shuttler pressed full throttle, building an 11-2 lead before sealing the game 21-13 to advance to the last eight.
“I am playing with her for the first time, and there were quite some long rallies, and I was prepared for it. I am happy that I could give my 100%. Now I need to get back and recover for tomorrow and come back stronger,” Sindhu said after the match.
Sindhu will next face Paris Olympics bronze medallist Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Earlier, Indian men’s singles player Kiran George also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating World No 38 Alex Lanier of France by 22-20, 21-13 in 46 minutes. George will face China’s Weng Hongyang in the next round.
In women’s doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa were knocked out in the Round of 16, suffering a 9-21, 21-23 defeat against Japan’s Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto. The pair became the fourth Indian doubles team to exit on the day.
